Creating a pocket in any bag for your phone is a great feature. The main pockets i have in my bags are a zipper pocket, card pocket, an ID pocket and a phone pocket.
Pockets in bags help us stay organise and find what we need quickly. This sewing tutorial will help you create an expandable phone pocket for your bags. This Because this Pocket is a simple rectangle it can easily be made bigger.
My pocket pattern piece is 6.5" x 5", To enlarge; make a larger rectangle to make more room in your pocket (depth) mark closer to the centre on the pocket pieces.
Lets get started by cutting 2 fabric and 2 fusible interfacing pieces
6.5" x 5".
Fuse the interfacing to on the wrong side of each fabric piece.
Place the phone pocket pieces right sides together. Stitch around
the pocket leaving a 3” turning hole at the bottom (long side).
Clip the corners and turn right side out. Press well.
With the exterior of the pocket up, make a mark 1” in from each
short side at the top and bottom of the piece.
Fold on the mark so the inside pocket fabric is touching. Top stitch 1/8” from the fold. Fold short sides to lay against the edge you just top stitched. Press.
Choose one of the Bag or pouch lining pieces to put your phone pocket on.
Stitch the short sides first 1/8” away front the edge. Then stitch along the bottom 1/8” away from the bottom edge. This will also close the turning hole.
