I was once so afraid of sewing with zips but it isn't that hard. there are a few things you can do to make learning to sew zips much easier.
I have created this beginner coin pouch to use up some scraps, you can make it with very little fabric. I used some Spoonflower test swatches to make these pouches. The fabric is my new star flower fabrics in teal and mauve you can find these fabrics in my Spoonflower shop.
You could also use Mini charm fabric
packs as these are cut 5” x 5".
To make this Beginner coin pouch you will need:
1x s 7" or larger zipper (we will cut it down)
You will need to cut out:
(2) 5" x 5" Exterior Fabric
(2) 5" x 5" Lining Fabric (I used calico)
(2) 5" x 5" Fusible Interfacing (optional)
(2) 5" x 5" Lining Fabric (I used calico)
(2) 5" x 5" Fusible Interfacing (optional)
If you are using the fusible interfacing, fuse this to the wrong side of the exterior fabric. The zip is longer than the pouch. This will make it easier to sew.
Place the zip along the top of one exterior piece, right sides together.
Place the lining piece right side down on top of the zip. clip, glue or pin and stitch along the top with a 1/4” seam allowance, Open out and finger press.
Place the right side of the zipper on top of the right side of one of the exterior pieces along the top.
Place on lining piece right sides together on to the zipper and clip, glue or pin and stitch along the top with a 1/4” seam allowance
Press right side out and top stitch 1/8” from the zipper on each side ensuring that the lining and exterior are flat as you sew. VERY IMPORTANT! Move the zipper pull to the centre. Trim the zip to meet the sides of the pouch pieces.
Match up and pin the two exterior pieces together and the two lining pieces together. Ensure that the zipper teeth point towards the lining.
Stitch around the entire pouch with a 1/4” seam allowance. Leaving a 3 - 4” hole in the lining for turning. Clip the curves well.
Using the hole you left, reach through and pull the pouch right side out.
Once right side out, fold in the hole and topstitch it closed.
Put the lining into the pouch and give the pouch a good press and enjoy your new coin pouch!
