A new quick sew tutorial, it's not a bag as such but it's just as fun to sew! This pincushion is perfect for all bag makers, and would also make a cute mother's day gift.
To make this adorable handbag pincushion you will need to download the pattern pieces FREE. I've also included an SVG file if you cut your fabric on a machine (Cricut, Brother Scan & Cut) like me.
Please be aware this tutorial is for personal use. If you love this tutorial and want a easy to print (full PDF pattern) version and to sell the purses you make from this pattern, you can purchase the Tutorial to PDF Pattern Bundle + Bonuses
You'll need a just some scrap pieces of fabric, stuffing, i used old cushion's stuffing and you can machine or hand stitch this pattern. Adding a button or embellishments is also optional.
Cut out 2 bag pieces, 2 flap pieces and 1 strap piece in your fabric.
Place the flap pieces right sides together and stitch from one side to the other with a 1/4” seam leaving the top edge open. Clip close to the curves and turn right side out. Press well and edge stitch close to the seam.
Place the flap right side up on the right side of one of the bag pieces matching the raw edge of the flap with the top of the bag piece. Baste stitch along the top 1/8" from the edge.
Add a button, rivet or stitch the centre of the flap to the bag piece, this allows the flap to sit flat while still being able to use it to hold clips.
Fold the strap piece with the long sides in half with wrong sides together. Press, then open and fold both sides into the middle to the centre line just created. Press and fold in half again. Press well. Edge stitch along each long edge.
Place the raw ends of the strap 1" in from each top corner of the bag piece.
Place the bag pieces right sides together and stitch from the top to the bottom cut out on each side with a 1/4" seam allowance.
Stitch along the bottom from cut out to cut out with a 1/4" seam allowance leaving a hole to stuff and turn the pincushion.
Reach through the top and form the bottom corners by placing the side seam and bottom seam right sides together nesting the seams and sew 1/4" from the raw edge.
Place the tops of the bag pieces together and stitch along the top with a 1/4" seam allowance.
Turn right side out through the hole you left in the bottom. push out all the corners and edges and stuff your pincushion with your stuffing through the hole. Stitch the hole closed with a ladder stitch.
This pincushion can hold a few clips and all of your pins. I'm hanging mine from the side of my machine. These are quite addictive to make!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and share your pincushions in my Facebook group
