Topstitching is an essential part of my sewing projects. In bags and pouches topstitching can be for cosmetic reasons or it can be used to keep your lining inside your pouch or bag.
You may be topstitching bag straps or sewing along a zip like in my example and it's essential your stitching is straight and consistent to get the best result.
I've created a video to show you how to install a zip in my squared pouch.
This pattern is available in my shop and has 3 sizes included.
- Use a 1/8" foot or 1/4" with a guide
- sew with longer zips than your pouch to begin with. If you are not making a zipper pouch with zip tabs then you can use a larger zip, this means the zipper pull stays out of the way as you sew. Perfect for beginners.
- If you're using a 1/4" foot you may need to move the zipper pull, move it, sew, then move it back, never sew next to the zipper pull as this will create wavy inconsistent stitches.
- You can topstitch with straight stitching or decorative stitches, even two lines of stitching if you would like.
Topstitching is a great way to get a professional look to your sewing, and is also used for structure.
